'I've just read Solander - it's a triumph!'  - Bernard Cornwell.

Historical Novels Review Online reviews novels not covered by the print Historical Novels Review.  These include, but are not limited to, electronically published, self-published, and subsidy-published novels; due to space considerations in the print HNR, mainstream and small press novels may occasionally be covered in HNR Online as well. The decision to publish reviews in the print vs. the online magazine rests with the editors.

Most reviews featured in Historical Novels Review Online are novels, but a small number of relevant non-fiction titles are also included.  The novels reviewed consist of traditional and literary historical novels, as well as historical mysteries, historical fantasy novels, historical romances, and alternate histories.

Titles submitted for review in Historical Novels Review Online must contain significant historical content, which is defined as a focus/setting of at least 50 years in the past.  The title must be professionally designed, written, and edited.  A brief description of the work and information about the author should be provided.  Promotional materials and publicity releases may also be included.

All materials must be submitted in print format. The following information should be included with all submissions: author, title, publisher, publisher’s address, publication date, price, number of pages, and ISBN.  Galleys and printed versions of e-books will be accepted, but finished copies are preferred.  No books, galleys, or printed versions of e-books can be returned.

Submissions may be rejected on grounds including, but not limited to, failure to follow submission guidelines; flawed subject, presentation, or writing; insufficient information included with the book; space or time limitations; or any other reason the editors deem fit. The editors do not enter into discussion on the acceptance, rejection, or placement of a submission. Authors/publishers submitting a work for consideration will receive e-mail confirmation when the submission has been received. When a submission has been accepted and the review published, the publisher or author submitting the work will be provided with a tear sheet.  Authors/publishers wishing to receive tear sheets via e-mail should so specify and include an e-mail address. The editors assume no obligation to inform the author/publisher when a submission has been rejected; absence of any tear sheet is deemed sufficient notice.

For questions about Historical Novels Review Online or inquiries about submitting books for review, please contact Suzanne Sprague (adult titles) or Mary Moffat (children’s and young adult titles).  Readers interested in joining the book review team should contact Suzanne or Mary.

Inquiries for the print Historical Novels Review should be directed to Sarah Johnson, Book Review Editor.
