The Review The Historical Novels Review aims to review every new work of historical fiction released in the USA or the UK.  Selected titles from Canada and Australia are also reviewed, for a grand total of over 800 reviews per year.

It is the only magazine of its kind, the best and most complete guide to the latest historical fiction in the world. Snippets from our reviews frequently appear on book jackets, and in the near future our reviews will be featured in the bestselling library research tool NoveList.

The Historical Novels Review is where I find out what’s happening in the historical fiction market.” – Carole Blake, Blake Friedmann Literary Agency.

Besides book reviews, we also feature author interviews, market updates, feature articles, and letters from subscribers.

The magazine is published quarterly by the Historical Novel Society, and members of the Society receive the current year's issues as a part of their
subscription. Back issues of some of the magazines are also available - for more details, contact Marilyn Sherlock . Alternatively, you can order random sample issues online (one copy of Solander, one of the Historical Novels Review), paying by credit card.

The current coordinating editors of the Historical Novels Review are Sarah Bower (UK) and Sarah Johnson (USA).

Sub editors are Sally Zigmond, Val Whitmarsh, Ann Oughton, Sarah Cuthbertson, and Mary Moffat (UK); Trudi Jacobson, Ilysa Magnus, and Ellen Keith (USA).

Book Submission Guidelines

Books submitted for review should have been published within the past year by a mainstream publisher or small press.  Due to lack of space, we are no longer accepting print on demand (POD) novels, self-published novels, or print versions of electronically published titles.

The books reviewed are all works of historical fiction, that is, works of fiction set at least 50 years in the past.  Besides traditional and literary historical novels, we also feature reviews of historical mysteries, historical fantasy novels, alternate histories, and a small number of relevant non-fiction titles.  We will also review historical romances if the history plays a strong role in the story.

To inquire about submitting books for review, please contact Sarah Bower (UK and Europe) or Sarah Johnson (US, Canada, rest of world) for the appropriate address to send your materials.  Please provide the following information:  author, title, publisher, publisher’s address, publication date, price, number of pages, and ISBN.  Also, include a brief description of the novel and some details on the author’s background.  We will accept galleys/book proofs as well as finished copies.  If you submit galleys, please follow up with a copy of the finished book when possible.  Neither books nor galleys can be returned.

Reviewer Contributions

The Historical Novels Review would not be made possible without the contributions of over 100 reviewers from around the world.  Our reviewers include authors, publishers, librarians, and general readers – all enthusiasts of historical fiction who read frequently in the genre.

Reviews are geared toward our fellow readers.  In 150-300 words, our incisive, insightful reviews provide an overview of the book’s plot and setting as well as critical commentary.

Historical Novel Society members interested in joining the review team should contact Sarah Bower (UK and Europe) or Sarah Johnson (US, Canada, rest of world) to receive more complete details.
