If you love historical fiction, please JOIN the society today. You won't be sorry. 'I've just read Solander - it's a triumph!' - Bernard Cornwell. |
It is the only magazine of its kind, the best and most complete guide to the latest historical fiction in the world. Besides book reviews, we also feature author interviews, market updates, feature articles, and letters from subscribers. The magazine is published quarterly by the Historical Novel Society. Members of the Society receive the current year's issues as a part of their subscription. Back issues of some of the magazines are also available - for more details, contact our membership secretary. Alternatively, you can order random sample issues online (one copy of Solander, one of the Historical Novels Review), paying by credit card. Editorial Staff: Managing

Book Submission Guidelines: Books submitted for review for the print magazine should have been published within the past year by a mainstream publisher or small press. The books reviewed are all works of historical fiction, that is, works of fiction set at least 50 years in the past. Besides traditional and literary historical novels, we also feature reviews of historical mystery, historical fantasy, historical romance, sagas, alternate history, Christian historical fiction, time-slip novels, children's and young adult historicals, and a small number of relevant non-fiction titles. Self-published, subsidy-published, and e-published novels are covered in Historical Novels Review Online rather than in the print magazine; details below. To inquire about submitting books for review, please contact Sarah Johnson for the appropriate address to send your materials. Please provide the following information: author, title, publisher, publisher’s address, publication date, price, number of pages, ISBN, and a brief plot description. We will accept galleys/ARCs as well as finished copies. If you submit galleys, please follow up with a copy of the finished book when possible. Neither books nor galleys can be returned. Although we will consider novels published within the last year, we like to receive materials as early as possible. Historical Novels Review Online: Selected electronically-published, subsidy-published, and self-published historical novels (many of which appear in print-on-demand format) are covered in our online review annex, Historical Novels Review Online. Due to space considerations in the print HNR, mainstream and small press novels may occasionally be covered in HNR Online as well. Submission guidelines for Historical Novels Review Online are available here. Decisions on placement in the print Review vs. the online annex rests with the editors. Reviewer Contributions: The Historical Novels Review would not be made possible without the contributions of over 100 reviewers from around the world. Our reviewers are all enthusiasts of historical fiction who read frequently in the genre. Reviews are geared toward our fellow readers. In 150-300 words, our incisive, insightful reviews provide an overview of the book’s plot and setting as well as critical commentary. New reviewers for the print Historical Novels Review must be current Historical Novel Society members. HNS members interested in joining the review team should contact Sarah Johnson to receive more details.
